Five of Cups

Five of CupsThe figure in this card is alone. If they are looking at anything, it’s the three spilled cups on the ground in front of them. Chances are they don’t see the two filled cups behind them.

This is a very human reaction. When we feel upset, we naturally close down. If we see the outside world at all, we tend to focus on the losses, the spilled cups. It’s just the way we’re wired. However, there are often gifts waiting for us in these dark times. “Look for the silver lining” is one of those sayings that asks us to turn around and actively seek out the filled cups. Yes, it takes a lot of energy. But once you summon up that strength, you will have a chance to start again. This is your chance to turn your life around. Let the tears flow, then move in a different direction.

The Suit — Cups or Hearts

The cup holds water, the heart holds emotion. Water nourishes, refreshes, revives. Emotions remind us we’re alive, give us reason to commune with others. Water can give life and take it away. Emotions can make us want to feel more and wish we could just stop feeling entirely.
This suit invites us to that place below the surface, to search for the Holy Grail, to get in touch with our creative side.

Number — 5

Five is a number of conflict, change, and opportunity.
