Inverted Knight of Cups

Interpretation

Inverted Knight of CupsThis is a young man with a great deal of water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) in his chart. This could be a woman in touch with her masculine self. The inversion pulls the water element out of balance.

The excess of water makes him a little too fluid in the way he reacts to others. This person can keep secrets or come out of the closet. He can also be a little slippery, and is versed in saying just what you want to hear. If this is someone in your community, take what he says and does with a grain of salt.

If this is you, this card indicates it’s time to figure out exactly who you are, apart from what you think people want you to be. Even if your motives are pure, constantly adjusting who you are based on the people you know makes you appear dishonest. Lasting relationships are based on honesty, which starts with self-honesty. If you need help with self discovery, find a professional to talk to. Find yourself, and you will find your loving and supportive community.

Interactions

The Knights add energy and movement to the surrounding cards.

Major Arcana

Fool: If any of the Knights appear in a spread with the Fool, they indicate travel.
World: If any of the Knights appear in a spread with the World, they indicate long-distance travel.

Minor Arcana

Eight of Cups (Hearts): If any of the Knights appear in a spread with the Eight of Cups (Hearts in other decks), they recommend leaving a situation.
Six of Swords (Spades): If any of the Knights appear in a spread with the Six of Swords (Spades in other decks), they emphasize the need for quick action.

The Suit — Cups or Hearts

The cup holds water, the heart holds emotion. Water nourishes, refreshes, revives. Emotions remind us we’re alive, give us reason to commune with others. Water can give life and take it away. Emotions can make us want to feel more and wish we could just stop feeling entirely.
This suit invites us to that place below the surface, to search for the Holy Grail, to get in touch with our creative side.

The Rank — Knight

Traditionally, knights represent men between the ages of 21 and 35. Energetically, the knights represent quick action, commitment, and energy.

The Inversion

There is nothing to fear with an inversion. Mary K. Greer explains in her book, The Complete Book of Tarot Reversals, that an inverted card may be interpreted in one or more of these twelve ways:

  1. Blocked or Resisted
  2. Projected
  3. Delayed, Difficult, Unavailable
  4. Inner, Unconscious, Private
  5. New or Dark Moon (if you are reading cards from a round deck)
  6. Breaking Through, Overturning, Refusing, Changing Direction
  7. The Opposite of the Upright Meaning, or Lacking
  8. Excessively
  9. Misused or Misdirected
  10. The Upright Meaning Backward
  11. A Rectification or Cure
  12. Magical, Unconventional, or Humorous
