Hierophant

Interpretation

HierophantThis, also known as the Pope or Pontiff, is the spiritual leader. Spiritual can be interpreted as anything other than material. This could represent a teacher or member of the clergy. This is a guide, who acts like a bridge to something greater, something outside of yourself.

Getting this card indicates the start of something big that will act as a bridge to a new view of your world. This, like all of the Major Arcana, is a strong card. Don’t be alarmed when it leads you to something you may have never experienced. You have a kind and capable guide by your side.

If you are the guide, be patient with your pupil. Move at the proper speed, and make sure you are worthy of their trust. This is not a journey to be taken lightly.

Interactions

In a spread, the Hierophant can interact with a few cards. The effect is usually to solidify a spiritual center.

Major Arcana

Emperor: If the Hierophant comes before the Emperor, spiritual desires will win in a struggle with the material. If the Hierophant comes after the Emperor, material desires will win out in a struggle against the material.
Lovers: If the Hierophant shows up in a spread with the Lovers, it can indicate a marriage.
Chariot: If the Hierophant comes after the Chariot, it indicates success in a creative field.
Devil: If the Hierophant shows up in a spread with the Devil, it may indicate power misused, deception, or spiritual manipulation.
Moon: If the Hierophant shows up in a spread with the Moon, it may indicate power misused, deception, or spiritual manipulation.

Four of Pentacles (Coins, Disks): If the Hierophant shows up in a spread with the Four of Pentacles (Coins or Disks in other decks), it may indicate power misused, deception, or spiritual manipulation.

The Major Arcana

The twenty-two cards of the Major Arcana tend to hold the big lessons. These cards carry powerful messages. If you are reading a spread of cards, watch for the Major Arcana. If your spread contains more than 30% Major Arcana, you are in the midst of something big, or beyond your control. If most of the cards in the spread are from the Major Arcana, you might be trying to exert too much control. You might have trouble expressing your feelings, or you might be near your breaking point. A spread without any Major Arcana cards could indicate you are hiding from the truth of the issue, or are in some deep distress. If this is the case, it is important to find someone you can trust to guide you through this period of time. In a spread, focus most of your attention on the Major Arcana. The other cards will be useful for clarifying the situation.
