High Priestess

Interpretation

High PriestessThis early member of the Major Arcana is a card of metaphor, symbols, dreams, and intuition. While some might consider it feminine wisdom, all can access it with practice.

When you get this card, start looking at everything as symbolic. Look for signs. Ask a question aloud and the next song you hear will answer it. Pick up a coin on the ground and the date will remind you of something significant. This is the day to pay attention to your (and others) Freudian slips, because they will disclose some important truth. Keep a dream journal and read it like an English professor. This is not the day to look at anything directly. This is the day to look behind the curtain to see how the magician makes that rabbit disappear.

Interactions

In a spread, the High Priestess can add a veil of secrecy or the occult.

Major Arcana

Magician: If the High Priestess comes after the inverted Magician (Cobbler or Magus in other decks), it suggests occult power wrongly used.
Hermit: If the High Priestess comes before the Hermit, a secret will be discovered. If the High Priestess comes after the Hermit, the secret will never be revealed.
Wheel of Fortune: When the High Priestess is in a spread with the Wheel of Fortune, it indicates what seemed hopeless to begin, will turn out fine. In fact, there will be some sort of artistic or scientific triumph.
Justice: If the High Priestess comes before Justice, secrets connected with the law will come to light only through legal affairs. If the High Priestess comes after, those secrets might come to light under different circumstances.
Tower: If the High Priestess comes after the Tower, it indicates disaster in the sphere of religion or an established institution.
Moon: If the High Priestess is found in a spread with the Moon, it suggests deeply internal and intuitive work.

The Major Arcana

The twenty-two cards of the Major Arcana tend to hold the big lessons. These cards carry powerful messages. If you are reading a spread of cards, watch for the Major Arcana. If your spread contains more than 30% Major Arcana, you are in the midst of something big, or beyond your control. If most of the cards in the spread are from the Major Arcana, you might be trying to exert too much control. You might have trouble expressing your feelings, or you might be near your breaking point. A spread without any Major Arcana cards could indicate you are hiding from the truth of the issue, or are in some deep distress. If this is the case, it is important to find someone you can trust to guide you through this period of time. In a spread, focus most of your attention on the Major Arcana. The other cards will be useful for clarifying the situation.

Number — 2
